boiler room oyster bar

This is a new series of food illustrations, starting in our own back yard of Eastern North Carolina... These are restaurant travels and the meals we have traveled to enjoy .

This is a K-Town BLT Burger from Vivian Howard’s Boiler Room Oyster Bar in Kinston, NC.

The Boiler Room is next door to the world-famous Chef and The Farmer restaurant. Be sure to have the Bloody Mary, too. It is worth the drive.

martha lou’s kitchen

When you visit Charleston, SC, you must eat at Martha Lou's Kitchen. It is not located in the heart of tourist-thronged Charleston. It takes a little dedication to find this little place. But if The New York Times can manage to locate it, so can you.

We particularly the fried chicken. Deelish.

Menu description: "Monday through Saturday, we serve up the best eats in town. Each Lunch & Dinner special is served with 2 or 3 sides of your choice."

If you are in London at Christmas you must go to Rules. This was the chicken pie. We celebrated mightily with Black Velvets and Champagne, too. Divine. As are the myriad decorations. And the attentive wait staff, who didn't mind as we lingered and chatted on and on.

bouchon bakery

When you wander through Yountville, in the Napa Valley, stop by the Bouchon Bakery. It smells divine. And its wares ably demonstrate the miracle of flour, water and yeast. Of course, I went for a portable sweet: Macaron and TKO for us. Next door is the fabled Bouchon Bistro, also worth a lengthy visit.

Admire all the gorgeous roses springing merrily all over Yountville and St. Helena, too.

dean & deluca

It’s hard to miss in Napa - Dean & Deluca, purveyor of delectable delights. The bakery area was irresistible. It is nestled next door to the light saber-wielding bunny at Hall Wines.

247 craven

This is the excellent plate of steak frites I had a little closer to home, at 247 Craven, in New Bern. This little bistro is about to expand in new digs on Middle Street. Wander in now!

A good lunch outing was had at the Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, NC. Chopping pork since 1947. A James Beard “American Classics” award-winner. Also highly praised by Calvin Trillin. Tasty! Cash only.

An elegant brunch in the horse stalls of the Horseradish Grill in Atlanta. Decadent brioche French toast with lots of bacon. Great spot, Courtnei! Yumsters!

Feel very chic and Parisian sitting at the bar at Coquette Brasserie in Raleigh. I love the Coquette 75. The frites are magnifique!

Kitchen + Bar

The Branzino at Cypress Hall in New Bern. The newest, hippest restaurant (and bar, very important) in New Bern. Incredible wood-fired pizza oven. The burgers are also excellent, but the fish is so paintable.
